Health Hazards of Energy Saving Bulbs

There has been a push for consumers to switch from traditional incandescent light bulbs to energy-efficient light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) have been the primary choice, because of their long-life, low wattage and significant energy savings. However, there are potential hazards associated with certain types of CFLs. Emissions from open (single envelope or unencapsulated) CFLs have demonstrated significant health risks associated with their use and disposal. Closed CFLs that resemble traditional incandescent light bulbs, as well as the tube strip-lighting fluorescent lights, pose few health risks for domestic or workplace use.

UV-C Radiation Exposure

Open CFLs emit high levels of UV-C radiation, which is more damaging than UV-A or UV-B radiation. Continual exposure to open CFLs as a result of close-range tasks or desk lighting conditions may cause reddening of the skin, similar to a sunburn. The Health Protection Agency recommends no more than one hour of direct exposure daily if other options for close-range lighting are not available.

Skin Cancer

A small increase in risk of skin cancer may also occur with exposure to open CFLs in close-range tasks or desk lighting. UV-C radiation exposure causes mutations in DNA that can lead to cancer. Anthony Carr, Director of the Centre for Genome Damage and Stability at Sussex University, warns that CFLs producing UV-C radiation can "even in small amounts, cause DNA damage like a germicidal lamp" used in hospitals to kill bacteria and viruses. Caution is advised when working under open CFL lights if other options for close-range lighting are not available.

Skin Irritation in People with Autoimmune Disorders

Open CFLs have caused skin irritation in people who suffer from the auto-immune disease lupus, whose condition makes them photosensitive. The risk of sunburn-like reddening is increased with exposure to open CFL lighting. It is recommended that people with a condition that causes photosensitivity switch to different lighting methods to avoid skin irritation or damage.

Mercury Contamination

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency asserts that no mercury is released into the environment when CFL bulbs (regardless of type) are intact or in use. However, all CFLs must be disposed of properly during replacement or due to breakage because of the risk of mercury contamination via skin or airborne transmission. State or local environmental regulatory agencies may permit disposal of used or broken CFLs in the garbage. For safely handling broken CFLs, the EPA advises wearing protective gloves, carefully scooping up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and placing the remnants in a glass jar with a metal lid or in a sealed plastic bag.

Still Like Sushi..??

This is a true case of a japanese man from Gifu Prefecture who complains incessantly about a persistent headache. Mr. Shota Fujiwara loves his sashimi and sushi very much to the extent of trying to get them as "alive and fresh" as can be for his insatiable appetite.

2010 - World Food Crisis

Early in 2009, the supply and demand in agricultural markets went badly out of balance. The world was experiencing a catastrophic fall in food production as a result of the financial crisis (low commodity prices and lack of credit) and adverse weather on a global scale. Meanwhile, China and other Asian exporters, in effort to preserve their economic growth, were unleashing domestic consumption long constrained by inflation fears, and demand for raw materials, especially food staples, was exploding as Chinese consumers worked their way towards American-style overconsumption, prodded on by a flood of cheap credit and easy loans from the government.

Normally, food prices should have already shot higher months ago, leading to lower food consumption and bringing the global food supply/demand situation back into balance. This never happened, because the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), instead of adjusting production estimates down to reflect decreased production, has been adjusting estimates upwards to match increasing demand from china. In this way, the USDA has brought supply and demand back into balance (on paper) and temporarily delayed a rise in food prices by ensuring a catastrophe in 2010.

Alchohol In Coca Cola...

I got hold of a human at Coke. I told him I wasn't looking for a lawsuit, I wasn't looking for "secret ingredients" I wasn't looking for any ingredient names. 

Here's what he said.

Here at Coke we comply with all government regulations and there is no alcohol in our products whatsoever. No fermentation takes place. Even in countries where Islam is the main religion we comply with all of their regulations.
 
I said "Does this mean that you have made a conscious desision that all of your ingredients even those flavorings which usually contain small amounts of alcohol, you use only ingredients which are alcohol free, all of the time, everywhere, without exception?"


He said " That is correct" I said, "So you use ALL ALCOHOL FREE ingredients, even your flavoring oils..." he said "That is Correct. I understand what you are saying. You are not looking for ingredients, you are a Muslim and you need to know if there are minute traces of alcohol, any amount." I said "Yes thats correct" He said "No, there is no way there could be any alcohol in our products"
 
However from Pepsi, I was told the same thing. Pepsi uses oils, such as Vanilla Extract, which contain small amounts of alcohol in them.


He also said that years ago there was cocaine in Coke, but that was before cocaine was illegal. When it became illegal they had to take all of the cocaine out of Coca Cola products. And that today there is no traces of Cocaine whatsoever in there products.
